Day 12

206.? that is the question for the last 5 days. Seem to have stalled out but look at the bright side still 6 lbs down.
Blood sugar was 115 this morning (Dr would like it from 90 to 130 and it has been running 140's so do see a very positive gain in that!) Walked my 2 miles. Breakfast is an omelet from 2 eggs, 3 slices of turkey bacon, chopped onions, low fat mozzarella cheese and topped with 6 stalks of asparagus. Lunch unkown but we are going to Mexico to make a friend a dental appointment so it will not be Margarita's DARN. Dinner before the Celtic Christmas Concert will be a shrimp salad.
Wish me luck.

South Beach Try

Chris is so enthusiastic that I had to give it a try to return to South Beach. Lost some weight 2 years ago when I did it..Until new years eve and never got back on it.
Patty is trying to adjust it to her life style also. Lets see what the "Newburn" women can do. Keep your fingers crossed
Today is breakfast in the club house; juice, scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns and toast. Ate the eggs, tomato juice and sausage so should be okay. Sunday is a pot luck for all 3 host couples and office people. Will have to watch what I eat.

Great Weekend

Chris, Patrick and Autumn spent Thanksgiving weekend with us. All had a great time. Thursday morning visited and prepared food, went to the activity room at the park about 1:30pm, 3 tables had been set up for each group, 2 together then one on the end, this let us set 16 at each "table". There were 153 people who attended. Only 2 had volunteered for clean up so Chris, Autumn and I did also. Patrick and Don took our dishes and decorations home (and while we helped clean at the hall they cleaned up all the mess and dishes at home...Great guys we have!!) After we had things done went swimming then played games at home.
Next came "Black Friday" as Chris and I are not real mall crawlers we all decided to go to the Flea Markets. Had breakfast at I Hop then looked and walked till feet gave out. Autumn did find some funky toe socks. Home and turkey sandwiches then Chris, Patrick and Dad checked out the casino while Autumn and I swam. Dinner was at DeBoyz then more games.
Breakfast at the park then time for the Hartley's to leave for home. They had a safe trip and called to say they have snow in the surrounding hills.
Great fresh ground coffee from Old Bisbee Roasters, "La Violeta Costa Rican Tarrazu" try http://www.UniqueCoffee.com if you want to try a cup.
Took out all my tubs of Christmas decorations Saturday afternoon but the wind came up so did not get the decorating finished.
So all you need for a great weekend is family, food and games.

We are thankful for.......

Primarily we are thankful for our health and the health of our family. So very lucky that Don is doing great and Aaron is improving daily. Now all we have to worry about family wise is who went "SPLAT" and twisted, sprained or bent something. But that is just life as we live it.
We are also thankful for the wonderful children we have and their spouses and the grandchildren. We may not be grand parents in the next town as we were when Chris and Patty were growing up but still enjoy and cherish time with kids and grandkids.
Next to come to mind is all the wonderful friends we have made in Yuma. Daily they want to know who we are doing and what they can do to help Don recover.
Tonight our wonderful neighbor Sandy (who had said about 2pm if we are available for dinner at 5pm she'd put a'nuther tater in the pot...we said yep) then came over and said I know your daughter and family are coming for Thanksgiving. I'll go down to Pat's and stay and they can have my house!! Now can you ask for a more giving, gracious person. We turned her down because they have non refundable hotel room but still the offer is outstanding.
Happy Thanksgiving to you every one.

Don

Don went in to the Yuma Heart Center today and had a stent put in the 90% blockage. All went well, he will come home tomorrow morning. Lots of people say he will feel so much better and do so much more.......any suggestions??? I can hardly keep up with him now! But I am ever so glad they found and were able to correct this.
Hugs and thanks at all who sent their good wishes, hopes, and prayers our way. And a special thanks to Ray and Jimmie Curtis for showing up unannounced to sit and talk with me while I waited.

Angiogram

Don had an angiogram thursday. They found 2 blockages one 100% one 90%. Tried for about an hour to put a stent in, but were not able to. He had to spend the night in the hospital beings the procedure took so long and was so late. Brought him home this morning about 7am. Still very tender but moving around. Have a consult appointment this thursday (11-8) and doctor had said will try to put stent in the area 90% the thursday (11-15) after.

Should have got my teaching certificate.....Or A Friday that is turning into a Monday.

Well this Friday has turned into a Monday. It is the last day for the lady I job share with (Cyndi), and the one who I job shared with 2 years ago (Patty) has been here a week trying to get caught up on the changes etc. Last night Patty's daughter in Michigan had a brain aneurysm and she will be flying out tomorrow. I told her I could cover 2 weeks full time to see what happens. So this is where I am job wise. We have no hosts to help after hours or week ends yet. Was told we would have one come in this week end....guess who that leaves to train the lady in the office. So far in the last 3 years I have trained 4 people and 3 have been my bosses (I don't want full time so keep getting to train whom ever is willing to work full time to be my "boss").
Otherwise it is great in Yuma. Has been in the low/mid 90's and cools down to mid 60-70 at night. Oh we have had one baby sidewinder found in the park. One scorpion (I was the lucky one who spotted it last night at dusk while Don & I were walking)and one Sun Spider which is poison's, Yes Patty I still enjoy the sunshine!!!!!!!!

3 Blue Sevens

Last night Wes and Harlean asked us to go to Bingo with them. We never win but enjoy their company so said yes. Got there a bit early so passed the time with the slot machines. Don hit 3 7's on the red, white and blue machine for about $60. Then hit 3 Blue Sevens for about $150. Time for bingo so about 3/4 the way through there is a game with 7's red, white and blue. You guessed it Don bingo'd on the blue seven, another $200. Marlyn had a good time...........

Life is Wonderful

Spent last week end in Bisbee, Az. seeing oldest daughter and family's new home and helping take out some LARGE juniper that blocked views from both living room and bedroom. (OHHH SO NICE not sidewinders or scorpions found in them.) Nice house that hosts many birds in yard (yes we saw a Cardinal in yard and the first one we had ever seen was in their home in Mass)
In the last month have seen both daughters and family plus my brother and sister. This is really better than we did when we lived much closer to them in Oregon.
Snowbirds (and friends) are returning to the park in Yuma. Went out with about 15 to dinner last night, have a couple over tonight for dinner. Yes winter season has started.

September

Spent the last 2 weeks of September with my youngest daughter and family in Oregon. Son in law had back surgery. Thank goodness he is doing much, much better. Will take a bit to recover from a month of pain and little activity. Did get a chance to visit with some family and friends while I was "home" plus soccer game and gymnastic meet.
Came home to cooler weather (high 90's) and more snowbirds returning.

Bingo

9 residents of Desert Paradise went to bingo at Paradise Casino last night. A week ago Wes won over $1,000. Norma goes in the mornings and she often wins, and a couple weeks ago I won $90. Well it wasn't our night. All we took home was a good time and a buy in won by Trudy. But I am sure will will try again.
Had a good visit with Patrick, Chris and Autumn a couple weeks ago.
Snowbirds are starting to return.

4th of July

Well our plans went out the window. Had planned on going to the Scorpion's Baseball game with fireworks after, but it is forcasted to be 118 degrees today so cancel that. They have a heat advisory to not be out between 10am and 5pm. Sounds like a good idea.
We had new carpet layed on our deck yesterday. It is very nearly the same color but not raveling and giving the birds good nesting material (they thought our awning would be a short commute to build their nests).
I am washing all the bedding, sheets, mattress cover, pillows etc and hanging them out on the line. Might as well use that 118 degrees for something.

Wheeeew what a day.....

I am working full time for 2 1/2 weeks while the lead worker in our office visits family. Had to reconsile the Master Card the manager uses to make purchases, get the electric bills out, then about 3:30pm two very nice looking young ladies walk in and say, hello we are the auditors.
Well I call the offsite manager to notify him (he has been our manager for about a year) our office manager of about a year left 2 months ago to manage another park so there is only Cyndi (the lead worker) and I left in our office. Cyndi has had some extra time lately so has gone through things and "organized" and purged them.
Quite a few things they were looking for I nor the manager were able to produce. Then they asked to have me open the safe...! Well the ex office manager had changed proceedure and money collected for ice, fax or copies was put in a envalope and "stuff" was paid out of it. (I had said it needed to be posted like we had previously done but she said NO.) Well it is biting us. Then we take a deposit for a mail box key (returning it when people leave and turn in key) again auditors said no can do, but in the past two audits I have been through we explained and got it okayed. No longer so I have to post all the money tomarrow. Then they found an envelope with $1. no label nothing..try to explaine that.
Tomarrow is another day and it will be better...but why did I take my vacation last month ago.

What do you love/hate?

Love/Hate with the 5 senses

LOVE:
the SIGHT of the sun rising or setting.
the SMELL of clean line dried sheets on the bed.
the TASTE of a margarita.
the SOUND of the ocean.
the FEEL of the sun on my face.

HATE:
the SIGHT of plastic bags littering the road sides and fields.
the SMELL of trout/salmon frying.
the TASTE of nothing, does this have anything to do with my weight.
the SOUND of the phone at 2 o'clock in the morning.
the FEEL of I have forgot to do something but not sure what.

Oregon Visit

Arrived back in Yuma about 5:30pm yesterday. Had a very good trip home (Thank You PATTY for the directions, made every highway change with no problem.) Yes I love my new car, it drives like a dream.
A good visit with daughter and family in Oregon. Got to see Dominick play basketball and 2 soccar games. What a guard he is, never saw hand/arms move so fast. Saw parts of 3 of Savannah's gymnastic practice. Really enjoyed all except the vault that she hyperextended her knee and spent the next half hour laying on the mat with ice packs. She was back practicing 2 days later but did not do ALL the things that had hard landing (but most!)
Spent Mothers Day with Patty and family plus Aaron's parents and brother. Nice phone call from Chris and family also.
Had lunch with with 2 aunts and uncles, stopped by and saw another aunt. Did cards and dinner with brother and wife, lunch and shopping with my sister.
But it is nice to be back home (Did miss Don who came home 6 days earlier than I did.

Ramona Pagent

Saturday about 20 plus people from Desert Paradise went to the Ramona Bowl Pagent in Hemet California. It is an outdoor play based on a novel "Ramona" written in 1884 by Helen Hunt Jackson. It has been going on ffor 84 years. It is quite an undertaking with a cast of "lots" 20 main speaking parts and then rancho children, elder's blessing, village children, rock indians, Spanish Dancers, Los Cancioneros. Each group has from 25 to 70 members. The Rock Indians are all over the rocks and hills that make up the back ground. When the Elder's Blessing takes place you look up and see what looks to be 100's of them standing scattered on the hill side with their arms raised. Also how many times have you seen a group of 3 to 6 horse men come riding in and so their part and it seem natural. Needless to say I think if you are in the area the end of April first of May you should go.
It made a long day for our group catching the bus at 7:45am and getting home about 12:30am.

Snowbirds Leaving

Our park is emptying out by bunches. There are only about 15 rigs left that do not stay down here all year. It is wonderful shopping and driving wise but not near the people to visit.
Last night we had 3 couples and 2 single women over to discuss square dancing this summer. All the callers that are here during the winter stop their programs May 1 and leave the area. This leaves no dancing for the people who live here full time. We have permission from the manager of the park to use the activity room one night a week to dance. We are trying to find out if there is enough interest. Don will call and workshop, we do not plan on doing rounds but will see what the future brings. I really can't do much with only one record.
Tonight we are going out to dinner with 2 couples one is from Michigan and leaveing for home tommarrow. The other is wife from Michigan husband from Oregon (or at least part time he worked at OSP with Don) They are not leaving till end of May. We have gotten together quite a few times this winter.

Farwell Dinner

Each year the park has a farwell dinner, this year we were asked to help prepare and serve the meal. It also seems each year we have more people staying later. The count for people attending was 250. So at 9am we joined 3 other couples in the kitchen to rechop cabbage, weight sliced ham in 4 1/2 oz piles. Slice 260 rolls and make ham and cheese sandwiches, each wrapped in foil. We got this all finished by 11am.
Roger and Linda Putzler arrived from Phoenix (they spend a week watching spring traing ball games and visiting this time of year.)He is calling the Yuma Festival next Feburary so we had set up a lunch meeting with the chairman Hope Amberg and Al Westfall a committee member. After lunch we took Roger & Linda to the Convention Center to see what the halls would look like. After a short visit at home they left and we went to the activity room to help serve dinner. We were able to serve 250 people the sandwich and cole slaw in 24 min.
That evening a bunch (12-14) met around the pool and we learned a new game. Each anty up 3 nickles. You roll dice that have either a dot, R, L or C. You roll only as many dice as you have nickles (up to 3) if you get dot you keep nickle, C you put one in pot, R pass one right, L pass one left. You are never out of the game till there is only one nickle left. That person gets all that have been put in the pot. Lots of fun, with time to talk and we spent the whole evening for less than a dollar.
Today Don is going to the End of Season square dance at the center. I am going with a number of other women in the park to "Old Town" Historic Yuma Theatre to see "Dublin's Traditional Irish Cabaret" We really enjoy the programs the city has at the Theatre.

This is a view of our home

Progressive Evening

This Christmas at the gift exchange in the park 3 couples (including us) received a bottle of wine we were not familiar with, so we got together and had a wine tasting party. This was so much fun we thought we would do it again but with each of our favorite wines.
We planned to do this last night but add a twist, 4 pm hors d' oeuvres at the Chuck & Patty Stanges, dinner at Tim & Darlene Kinsey's and cards and desert at our place. This was a great plan until Valentines evening when the park had a wonderful dinner and dance. As we were all visiting someone mentioned the next night......Don and I looked at each other in surprise...yes we had it written down but had not looked at the calender and we both had to work. Well needless to say our desert was not the jelly roll with fresh strawberries I had planned. Don came up with the idea of vanilla ice cream topped with creme de minte. All was a huge success, well maybe a hitch in trying to teach hand and foot after 4 bottles of wine, but we plan on doing it again.

Let there be SILVER

Well the Newburns and friends went to the Yuma Senior Games....(something like the senior olympics) We thought this would be the year to try something new. Signed up ...really talked this up and got a couple other couples from our park to try it also.
Opening day Don is sick so I go with friends. I had entered bowling pin toss and nail driving. Don hand entered balloon toss. Well I did participate but at least did not take last place. (How does 16 seconds to pound in 3 nails sound...it sounded good to me also but 1st place in my age was about 5 seconds. Tim our dear friend from Michigan did quite well. He took gold in baloon toss and medaled in bowling pin also.
Now Don has been doing great in darts at Desert Paradise. Has got the badge at least once and came close many other time. Tim and Darlene have also had the honor of wearing the badge. Everyone does a prelimenary placing round. Well what does that mean (I wondered also) but the 18 women in my age group lined up, I was the last in line by the way they called our names, and each threw 3 darts..four time for a total of 12 throws. Then we wait (They men are also doing the same....and they also wait.) and we wait and we wait. They then call the women 80 + and have them throw, then the 70 to 79, and then 65 to 69..at last the 50 to 64 women..That's me. First two women have their game. Then they call me and another women, I won by 2 pts. Then many more throw and they call me, I win by 4 points. Then many other then I win again. Don, Tim, Bruce, Laurie and Darlene have all been elimated in their age groups. Then I am again called. What a suprise I win. By this time Bruce and Laurie have left and Don, Tim and Darlene are sitting rooting me on. Next game I lose then the next I tie so we have a one dart throw off. She throws and gets 11 so I throw and get 9. Oh No that is 2 loses so I am out. Wait they are announcing the medals. What is this....I get second place and a silver medal.
Yeah...good thing I didn't realize how good I was doing till it was over.
Yep guess I will try this again next year.

Winds

Well I have found out this is much harder than when I watched either daughter do it.
Seem to have two going but will hope to have time to get advice to stay on one.

Don did a demo square dance for the Lettuce Days Festival in Yuma a week ago. It was quite a a job after really not calling much for 2 years, and weather from hell. The wind blew the arm off the record. One time it actually picked the record off the turn table a sent it for a spin. I got to hold the speaker down for an hour. All in all the audience seemed to have a good time and the dancers also.
Winds have died and temp. is raising so we are enjoying outside again.

Just did it

I will try to start a blog to show pictures to my family.
